Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
War-themed films have long been a genre that both entertains and educates audiences on the harsh realities of conflict, violence, and the human condition in times of war. In areas affected by conflict, such as Bama Local Government Area in Borno State, these films may resonate more deeply with young people, as they are exposed to the realities of war in their daily lives (Ibrahim & Umar, 2024). These films can influence the behavior and attitudes of adolescents, especially those who have witnessed or experienced violence and displacement themselves. Research has shown that media content, including films, plays a significant role in shaping youth behavior, attitudes, and perceptions (Musa & Ahmed, 2023). War-themed films, with their portrayal of bravery, survival, and the impact of war on individuals and communities, could affect adolescents' views on violence, aggression, and conflict resolution. These films could potentially glamorize war or provide valuable lessons on peace and resilience. This study seeks to examine how war-themed films influence the behavior of adolescents in Bama, specifically in terms of their attitudes towards conflict, aggression, and problem-solving.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Bama Local Government Area, which has been severely impacted by insurgency and conflict, adolescents are exposed to violent environments that may shape their perspectives and behaviors. With the increasing availability of war-themed films, it is critical to investigate whether these films exacerbate aggressive tendencies or promote more peaceful behaviors among young people. While previous studies have explored the impact of media on adolescent behavior, there is limited research focusing on war-themed films and their specific effects on youth behavior in conflict-affected regions like Bama. The problem lies in the lack of empirical evidence on whether exposure to war-themed films in this context leads to more violent or more empathetic behaviors in adolescents. This study aims to bridge this gap and explore the possible behavioral influence that these films may have on youth, particularly in terms of aggression, conflict resolution, and empathy.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the influence of war-themed films on adolescents' attitudes towards violence and aggression in Bama Local Government Area.
To examine the role of war-themed films in shaping adolescents' perceptions of conflict resolution and peace-building.
To explore the potential effects of war-themed films on adolescents' overall behavior and emotional well-being in conflict-affected areas.
1.4 Research Questions
How do war-themed films influence adolescents' attitudes towards violence and aggression in Bama Local Government Area?
What role do war-themed films play in shaping adolescents' views on conflict resolution and peace?
Are there any observable changes in behavior or emotional responses among adolescents who watch war-themed films regularly?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Adolescents who watch war-themed films are more likely to exhibit aggressive behavior and attitudes towards violence.
War-themed films positively influence adolescents' perceptions of conflict resolution and peace-building strategies.
There is a significant correlation between regular exposure to war-themed films and changes in adolescents' emotional responses, including empathy and aggression.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is important for understanding how war-themed films impact adolescents' behavior, especially in conflict-affected areas such as Bama. The findings will be valuable for policymakers, educators, and media producers in developing media content that can either mitigate the negative effects of violence or promote peace-building efforts among young people. Additionally, the research will contribute to the broader understanding of how media shapes youth behavior, especially in regions where conflict and violence are prevalent.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on adolescents aged 13-18 years in Bama Local Government Area, Borno State, who have been exposed to war-themed films. The research will examine the influence of these films on their behavior, particularly regarding aggression, violence, and conflict resolution. Limitations include challenges in isolating the influence of films from other factors, such as family background or peer influences, which may also affect youth behavior. Additionally, there may be biases in self-reported data from participants regarding their attitudes or behaviors.
